A lot of individual investors were making a lot of money just by following a stock that was on the up. They knew little of the financial fundamentals of the company and probably even less about the products or service the company provided.
There were a lot of sites offering advice on which technology stocks to buy mainly based on their financial performance with a passing glance at the significance or otherwise of their products or services in the marketplace.
